About Us

The Smart Start Innovation Fair is funded by Ontario Research and Commercialization Program (ORCP), developed by the Ontario Government
's Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI).  The MRI-ORCP fuels innovation in Ontario by investing in the creation of entrepreneurial networks; one such network is TECNet.

TECNet is a partnership between the Xerox Center for Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (XCEEi) at McMaster University and the Center for Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (CBET) at Waterloo University.  The goal of TECNet is to facilitate knowledge transfer, networking and training of entrepreneurs within the XCEEi and CBET to commercialize innovation in Ontario and Canada.

TECNet is organizing the Smart Start Innovation Fair.

XCEEi and CBET are training centers for entrepreneurs who are given resources, mentorship and proven commercialization methodologies to take technology to market in a results oriented, hands-on and disciplined manner where the end result is the creation of a new venture or spin-off company.

Core Objectives

. Train a new generation of entrepreneurs how to recognize and develop new technologies, and take them to market

. Practice industry proven commercialization processes within an academic environment

. Provide business development and network capabilities for private, public and individual enterprise projects

The core focus of the XCEEI and the CBET is to promote the commercial success of innovation in Canada through the development of highly-skilled entrepreneurs. The XCEEI and the CBET provide the entrepreneur with the opportunity to learn necessary skills and practice methodologies to translate ideas into commercially viable goods and services.

Essential knowledge tools to facilitate research and business start-up activities are available to all our students in the Enterprise Development Lab. Graduates will be able to create new products or service businesses within existing companies, or initiate standalone enterprises.
